Théo Hennequin

Théo Hennequin is a Brussels-based graphic designer and visual artist with a conceptually driven practice spanning culture, music and sport. He collaborates with institutions, artists, festivals and collectives, from major museums to independent structures, to articulate distinctive positions across print, digital and motion.

His practice is rooted in the circulation of images and forms between swiss rigour, experimental layering and popular cultures, from the football stand to the mountain trail, using the distance between them as a space for inquiry.

About

JPO ÉSAC

2020, Cambrai

Font: Helvetica (Max Miedinger)

Poster for the open day at ÉSAC, the art school in Cambrai, on 8 February 2020, unfolded into four panels and placed on concrete steps: large, tapered black and white shapes mirror each other on either side of the fold, with the ÉSAC logo – drawn in a metallic grey outline – running through them

Poster designed for the open day at ÉSAC, the Cambrai School of Art and Communication, adapted into an animation.

The poster treats information as a graphic element. Folded into quarters, it contrasts a black background with a white one, where large, tapered shapes mirror each other on either side of the fold. The ‘ÉSAC’ logo – very large, oriented vertically and outlined with a metallic sheen – cuts through these shapes and overlays the layers. The information is presented using two typographic styles: a highly contrasting, ornate serif display typeface for the title and date; and bold Helvetica for the address and contact details. In the animation, the hierarchy shifts: the date, followed by the address, take turns coming to the fore, whilst the shapes distort.

A close-up detail of the ÉSAC Open Day poster: a pattern of fine dots causes the white to turn to black along a diagonal fold, and the words ‘le 08’ in the date appear in light serif type on the black background
