Théo Hennequin

Théo Hennequin is a Brussels-based graphic designer and visual artist with a conceptually driven practice spanning culture, music and sport. He collaborates with institutions, artists, festivals and collectives, from major museums to independent structures, to articulate distinctive positions across print, digital and motion.

His practice is rooted in the circulation of images and forms between swiss rigour, experimental layering and popular cultures, from the football stand to the mountain trail, using the distance between them as a space for inquiry.

Visual identity of the exhibition (SUR)MONTAGE: the title in ink, with the letters eroded, on a white surface streaked with brushstrokes

(SUR)MONTAGE was the collective exhibition of Les Îles Mardi, an artist cooperative and shared studio space in Brussels. It brought together some thirty artists. It traced the association’s evolution and asked a question: how can different practices and aesthetics coexist, how do we build a commons? Its structure reflected the cooperative’s governance: the artists were gathered in small groups, each carrying its own “mini-curation”.

With Les Îles Mardi, we designed the exhibition’s visual identity in the do-it-yourself spirit of the studio. A white surface streaked with brush marks, like a wall painted before the hanging, hosts an inked title with eroded letters. Information is added like reminders: fluorescent yellow notes list the groups of artists. The catalogue extends this system with photographs of the set-up and of the exhibition. (SUR)MONTAGE extends the identity of Les Îles Mardi: the fluorescent yellow, the typography and the dissonance between structure and gesture become exhibition material.

Hands holding the exhibition catalogue: a white cover streaked with brushstrokes, with the title (SUR)MONTAGE printed vertically in black ink
Open catalogue: on the left, a full-page photograph of the stack of yellow leaflets in the printing press; on the right, several small photographs of artworks and the exhibition space against a white background
Layout of the catalogue pages: a man leaning over a misted-up shop window, a roll of paper next to a fluorescent yellow tape measure, and double-page spreads combining bilingual text and photographs of artworks
A spread of six double-page spreads from the catalogue: texts in French and English, photographs of artworks and installations, and people at work in the exhibition space
