Théo Hennequin

Independant graphic designer and visual artist based in Brussels (BE), working on projects in editorial design, visual identity, web design and motion design. Drawing inspiration from both Swiss graphic design and contemporary and experimental movements, he experiments with typographic compositions and the layering of elements. In doing so, he develops a unique aesthetic and theoretical repertoire.

He is also working on two separate projects. The first is a research project exploring the world of football and fan culture, focusing on aspects off the pitch and the inner workings of the sport. The second is a project drawing inspiration from mountainous landscapes, sports practised in such environments, and mountainwear.

About

Brutalism and post-punk

2022

Fonts: Cold (Théo Hennequin), Cirka (Pangram Pangram - Nick Losacco)

Brutalism and Post-Punk is a typeface that explores the link between Brutalist architecture and the post-punk aesthetic. The project takes the form of an original typeface, designed to visually convey the structural and emotional principles of these two worlds.

The typeface, a sort of revival, is sans-serif, rigid and geometric, with a heavy weight that lends it a physical and imposing presence, reminiscent of the massive, monolithic volumes of Brutalist buildings. The slight kerning creates a subtle tension between legibility and density, whilst the height of the glyphs ensures visual coherence and a minimalist graphic rhythm, echoing the repetition and formal rigour of the architecture.
